Engineering the Invisible: YD Kim and Uniqconn’s Vision for Deterministic Connectivity
How a deep-tech founder is redefining the connection layer for Physical AI, robotics, intelligent devices, and next-generation industrial systems
In an era where intelligence is rapidly moving from the cloud into physical machines, connectivity is becoming as critical as computing itself. At the forefront of this shift is YD Kim, Co-Founder & CEO of Uniqconn Inc., who is pursuing a deceptively simple idea: eliminate the limitations of conventional physical connectors by making high speed connections wireless, deterministic, and contactless.

Kim’s journey into this space was shaped by years spent across the connectivity industry. At Gigalane, he led aerospace and defense connectivity sales, securing vendor registrations with organizations including Lockheed Martin and Boeing. Later, at Sensorview, his work in product management exposed him to 5G mmWave design wins and customers such as Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics, and Corning.
Across these experiences, one recurring limitation became increasingly evident. As data rates increased, connectors themselves were becoming the bottleneck. Copper contacts introduced constraints involving data integrity, electromagnetic interference, mechanical wear, and reliability. For Kim, this was more than an industry challenge it was an opportunity to rethink the connection layer itself.
In May 2022, Kim joined forces with Dr. CW Kim and Jerry Shin to establish Uniqconn. Their ambition was bold: replace the connector segment of high speed data links with a wireless semiconductor solution.
The company’s defining breakthrough came in 2024. Uniqconn had already developed a functioning 60 GHz chip, but customer feedback revealed a more demanding requirement: bidirectional communication through a single chip pair. Rather than ship the existing Half-Duplex solution, the team chose to return to silicon and pursue Full-Duplex architecture.
That decision delayed revenue and increased financial pressure, but it ultimately produced what Uniqconn describes as its Full-Duplex 60 GHz transceiver, a technology that later contributed to its recognition as a 2026 CES Innovation Award honoree.
Today, Uniqconn’s flagship UC60 is designed to provide high-speed, contactless connectivity while preserving the customer’s existing system architecture. Supporting protocols including USB, MIPI, Gigabit Ethernet, CAN, SPI, I²C, and UART, the solution is designed to reduce integration complexity while addressing environments where conventional connectors, optical systems, or pogo-pin solutions can become restrictive.
The company’s progress reflects more than technological ambition. Founded in 2022, Uniqconn has moved toward mass production in roughly four years, secured significant customer commitments, and built a team drawn from major technology organizations and research institutions. Its manufacturing ecosystem includes TSMC for silicon, alongside established packaging and reliability partners.
For Kim, however, customer adoption remains the most meaningful measure of success. In semiconductor markets, prototypes demonstrate possibility; repeat orders and next generation design wins demonstrate value.
His vision extends beyond today’s applications. Humanoid robots, electric vehicles, industrial systems, and emerging space based computing platforms will require increasing volumes of high speed, reliable data connections. Kim believes these systems will demand connectivity that is not merely fast, but deterministic, robust, compact, and serviceable.
Uniqconn is therefore exploring technologies beyond UC60, including scalable contactless connectivity for orbital data center docking and high speed rotary joint platforms for humanoid robotics and defense applications.
Kim’s leadership philosophy mirrors this engineering mindset. He believes founders must create solutions they genuinely believe are necessary not simply chase prevailing trends. His focus remains on solving real customer problems, challenging assumptions early, and creating an environment where teams can build, test, and even discard ideas without fear.
Ultimately, Kim does not describe his ambition in terms of creating the loudest technology company. He envisions something more enduring: a future in which engineers reach for deterministic wireless connectivity as naturally as they once reached for a copper connector.
If that future arrives, Uniqconn will not merely have built a product. It will have helped create an entirely new connection category.
